Anyone with any inside info on BSG, bout half way through S2

Correct me, if I'm wrong, please. I think I remember, in the original Miniseries, that the new-fangled Vipers they had on board Galactica were useless against the Cylons, something about the Cylons being able to shut them down. So they went backward technology and used the out-dated, obsolete Vipers they had on board as museum pieces to fight.

Now, they've found this Pegasus and the two Battlestars are getting set to blow each other to chunks, when the Admiral sends out Vipers to fight. Where the hell did Pegasus get Vipers that would stand up against the Cylons without being shut down like the original Galactica ones?
