"Mother!" Spock reached out toward her, his hand grasping at the empty air where, just moments before, his mother had been standing. But it was too late. She was gone and he was already caught up in the transporter effect that was taking him, his father, and the surviving members of the Vulcan High Council back to the relative safety of the Enterprise.
And for a few, blissful moments, there was peace in his mind. A kind of peace he had striven for his entire life, but never known. It was a peace not meant to last.
When he became aware again, he was swallowed in rage. Rage and horror and a sucking emptiness where his soul used to be. His mother was gone. It was irrational and illogical to be consumed by such raw emotion, but he was unaware of anyway in which to stop himself from sinking into this choking pit.
His mother was gone! He saw himself, in his mind's eye, hunting down the man responsible and making him pay. In his mind, he gave himself over to the barbaric emotions he had inherited from his human ancestry. He let the rage feed him, he let the shock carry him through as he relived the moment of his mother's death over and over. And he let the hatred fill him with an unquenchable thirst for revenge.
And finally, he heard his father's voice. Like the slap of ice cold water against his face, the sound of his name woke him from his grief. He allowed his hand to fall back down by his side. Looking around, he saw all the faces turned toward him, a collective look of pity upon them. Pulling himself up, he stepped off the transporter pad and walked out of the room.
