So, I go to the AT&T store the other day because I'm having a problem with my phone. It won't play music or video. So they tell me that I need to do this update thing for the OS that's been out for about a month or so, give me a print out of detailed instructions, and send me on my way...sound simple!!

So I'm sitting here tonight, trying to do the update. I download the program, hook my phone up, and start the update process. Then I get a message....the program is unable to update my phone. I "grr" at the screen, but I'm not too terribly worried. So I unplug my phone from the computer (which is what the thing TOLD me to do) and the entire thing goes black. Now my phone won't turn on and, on the screen is a yellow triangle symbol that just says "Downloading: Please do not turn off device." This is all great and good, except it's been saying this for over an hour and the thing is no longer hooked up.

My phone is officially dead.

I call the 24 hour AT&T support number and get told that I need to take my phone into a service center.

The service center guy is the one who TOLD ME TO DO THIS!!

What kind of phone is it?

Have you tried taking the battery out? That will force a hard restart and sometimes, that can do wonders.

When you go into the store, make sure you mention that you just followed the directions given to you, don't let them try to make you into the one who made a mistake.

If it's still not taking care of the issue, call back in and ask for a manager right off.

I used to work for them *G*.

It's a Samsung Galaxy S (SGH-i987).

I've taken the battery out, attempted a reboot, everything. Now it just won't boot back up. If it's plugged in, I get the yellow triangle thing, if it's unplugged, I get a little bitty diagram thing telling me to plug it in.

I'm not only going to tell them I just followed directions as stated by the guy at the store, I have a print out given to me, by him, with those directions.

The store I'm going to tomorrow isn't the same as I went to before. I'm going all the way downtown and they will either fix my phone or I will walk out with a new one. Those are really their only options.

Either way, I'm not leaving there without a working phone (I cannot survive without a phone and I swear to GOD, I'm upgrading to an iPhone as soon as I can. I know how to work one of those.)

Time to go put my Bitch powers to good use.

Ruh roh. I did that to an iPhone once - what happened with me was my USB drivers on my computer were fucked up. They're randomly disconnect the device from the computer for a second and so the update would fail midway through. And if it fails and can't finish, it gets stuck in recovery mode. >.<

Don't know if that's what happened to you (especially since they're different phones), but it was a total disaster since I had the backup on the machine with the effed up USB connections (turns out the drivers wouldn't worked because the ports were screwy, ugh). Ugh.

Anyway! Did your Captivate make backups somehow?

My phone never made a single backup. Which was bad because the first thing it did was erase everything on my phone.
